What are magic tricks: a little history
The world of illusion and magic tricks has been extremely intriguing and astounding to viewers for several millennia. And many tricks seem to them incredible, beyond understanding. This is the key to unraveling the secret of the popularity of this type of art.
Indeed, people want to believe in a miracle, that they are able to float in the air, appear out of nowhere and disappear, move objects with the power of their eyes and guess the thoughts of others. And they will never stop dreaming, because dreams are a kind of engine of progress. This means that magic as an art will never disappear.
What is magic?
Magic must be understood in two different meanings:
1) as a complex of ritual actions and occult Sciences;
2) magic as the art of illusion and magic tricks.
If we consider the word “magic “as a term, it means magic (translated from the language of the Ancient Greeks) and comes from” Magos ” (magician, illusionist, fortune teller).
What is the focus?
During the Crusades people were treated to a magic show as machinations of the Devil, and the stray magicians used it to be more “convincing” showing of tricks accompanied by the phrase “hoc est corpus meum” (it is recited in the Churches during liturgies and offerings of gifts) and the mention of the name Jesus. Thus, the tricks looked not only mysterious, but also frightening-divine, so people “gilded the handle” and because they were amazed at what they saw, and in order to buy off the “servant of Satan”.
Over time, “Hok est corpus meum” became the expression “hocus pocus”, and the Slavs paraphrased it in their own way – “hocus pocus”.
It is considered that the main rule of the illusionist’s work is “averting the eyes”, and a successful demonstration of the trick is to say one thing and do the opposite. All this is aimed at distracting the viewer’s attention, and these “tricks”were applied at the dawn of the art of magic. The meaning of these actions is that it is difficult for a person to follow several actions at the same time, so a skillful “turning aside” of his observant gaze is the key to a successful demonstration. Because the audience doesn’t notice the magician’s movements.
Nowadays, there are many tricks and sections of magic: with the disappearance and appearance of objects, manipulating them, and even mental tricks, where the main prop is the brain of the viewer or demonstrator.
And there are quite a lot of illusionists today. At the same time, their popularity does not fade: recently, the magician’s show is an integral part of the entertainment program at events and various events.
