How do I learn card manipulation and techniques?
Starting to study the technique of card manipulation, beginners of this art try to understand how to learn techniques with enviable efficiency and not give up the idea of becoming a great manipulator at the first difficulties.
In the modern world, there are very few professional illusionists who are proficient in card techniques. And all this is because mastering the art of card manipulation requires a lot of effort and a lot of time.
Most Internet resources promise you “lightning-fast” mastering of card techniques-from a few hours to a few days. In fact, this applies only to the simplest tricks.
In short, if you are attracted to the art of card manipulation, prepare to spend most of your time training (they can last for years). There are very few people who are so capable and patient. Therefore, the dreams of a fabulous career as a magician for most ” future illusionists “are often” broken ” by the routine of preparing for performances.
Remember! Card manipulation is based on three pillars: patience, discipline, and exercise.
Manipulation of cards is the most attractive for spectators, because they seem to be very mysterious… in spite of their veracity. In addition, the knowledge of card tricks to perfection will allow you to enjoy the special respect of their colleagues in the shop.
So, the first acquaintance with card manipulation makes you nervous and causes some concern: the cards do not lie in the hand as they should, do not move as you want, and fall quite the wrong way… perhaps resentment about the fact that you are trying to do a trick and nothing comes out of it…
You must be prepared for the fact that most card tricks do not work out the first time! And sometimes even after a month of training! For example, the five-hundred-page encyclopedia of slating contains descriptions of tricks that can easily be obtained after an hour of training. But there are some that you can master them for years!
So, the manipulation you do not succeed… but you do not despair and train hard. And, lo and behold, for the tenth, hundredth, or thousandth time, the trick still obeyed you! So you can demonstrate it and you can see the light at the end of the tunnel! Continue to train in the same spirit and soon you will be able to masterfully perform this trick.
Important! It is considered that you are able to perform card manipulation, if you get the trick in 10 cases out of 10!
Why is card manipulation so difficult to master?
When trying a new trick with cards, many people begin to feel inferior or even believe that ” the hands are growing out of the wrong place.” And they give up trying to learn the trick with cards. In fact, the problem is that when manipulating the muscles of the hands are involved in unusual movements for them. And the muscles, as you know, need to be trained. Persistent and regular training will lead to the fact that you will be subject to any, even the most complex card manipulation and slating.
How to learn card manipulation?
First, you need to study the description of the technique. And only then proceed to practical classes.
At the beginning of training, you should perform the trick very slowly, working through every detail and paying special attention to the little things. It is necessary to practice the movements every day with a positive attitude and in a relaxed state. It is useful to start training with meditation: it will help you to tune in and get rid of life’s problems. Also, your favorite music can help you get rid of boredom while practicing a trick.
During the training, your head should not be occupied with outside thoughts: when performing the manipulation, you should be in a state of euphoria from what you are doing. And even if your movements are still far from perfect and the cards are still beyond your control, a positive attitude will definitely do its job!
And, most importantly, if you, for example, train to specifically surprise someone, the chances of performing a masterly manipulation will tend to zero. Why is that?
Because there is such a phenomenon: if during practice you think about winning over someone, then the effectiveness of the training drops sharply and your chances of winning at times decrease. And if you think about how you will learn how to perform a magic trick, enjoying the learning process itself, then success will not take long to wait!
If you are starting to work out a new technique, do not spend more than 15 minutes at a time, and for the entire workout – more than an hour. Postpone the practice session for later if you notice that you are already less focused, or if you feel tired in your hands, especially if they are clamped or hurt. Do not torment yourself with learning new things if you do not feel 100% ready for it.
The key to success in learning a new card manipulation at this stage is your complete confidence that everything will work out. While continuing regular training, you can constantly tell yourself (out loud or in your mind – who likes it better) affirmations like “I will succeed”,” I will succeed”,” I am a card genius”, and so on.
If the card manipulation is obtained without peeping into the training source, then you can be congratulated on successfully passing the first stage of training. After that, you should not just learn to perform the trick as quickly as possible. The correct way is to divide the training into three parts:
1) working out the entire manipulation;
2) performing individual, most complex elements;
3) working out the entire number, including the style of submission and “distractions” (misdirections).
It should be noted that it is extremely important to learn how to perfectly perform the entire sequence (the so-called “routine”) after you have mastered the trick and can already do without using the manual. And card magic is created only by memorized sequences in the dexterous hands of the performer! So manipulation as such is difficult to call tricks, since there is no intention to fool the viewer or mislead him. Magic in the eyes of the public is created in a different way: card tricks are presented one by one with the use of various puzzles and maneuvers.
When you can easily perform the entire sequence of manipulations, do not forget to sometimes work out complex details separately. And do not stop regular training: very soon you will notice that the manipulation comes out perfectly much more often than before. But this is not a reason to stop training: your movements should be brought to automatism, without even thinking about what you are currently demonstrating.
The commandment of a professional Slater: “When you have reached perfection, then it’s time to start practicing in earnest.”
So, you perform a card trick “on the machine”, without errors and hitches, so you can try to show it to the audience. If you start doing this earlier, there is a great risk of exposure. In addition, when performing a manipulation, you will be able to conduct a dialogue with the audience or distract their attention with various jokes, and not think about your next move.
This is how you need to learn techniques and manipulations, spending a lot of time and effort. But the reward for backbreaking work will not keep you waiting! Once you have perfected your technique, your skills will stay with you forever (such as swimming, driving a car, or Cycling). You will be able to surprise and delight the audience and colleagues in the shop, and you will also be proud of your masterly possession of card manipulation.
