Summer experiments for children with water

summer experiments for children with water tests for children with water have always been popular because of their simplicity and clarity for the child. And in the summer, experiments with water are especially relevant, since it is hot outside, and all “wet” classes can be taken out into the fresh air. In one of the articles we have already told you about experiments for children with water, today I suggest that you conduct several summer experiments:

– Extraction of fresh water from salt water

— Hand wash in the street from a plastic bottle

— Magic tricks with soda

– Optical experiments with water

– Amazing funnel

– Leaky bag-non-spill

– Movable toothpicks

Extraction of fresh water from salt water
We all know that you can’t drink salty sea water. But not everyone knows that you can get fresh, drinkable water from sea water. To do this, we will need a basin of salt water. If you are at sea, you can use sea water, if not, then add table salt to fresh water and stir. At the bottom of the pelvis in the center put a fairly heavy Cup, which will not float. The water level in the basin should be lower than the neck of the Cup. Cover the basin with a transparent clean film and put a small weight over the Cup. In our case, it is a pebble. We take the basin of water out into the sun and wait.

The meaning of the entire design is as follows: the sun’s rays passing through a transparent film, heat the water, and it begins to evaporate intensively. Since the basin is covered with a film, water droplets collect on the film and flow into the Cup (for this purpose, you need to make a recess, otherwise the water will drip back into the basin). Only pure water can evaporate, and salt and other impurities will remain as a sediment on the bottom.

We took the basin out on the balcony for 4 hours from 14.00 to 18.00. During this time, we collected 50 ml of water.

The water dispenser on the outside of a plastic bottle
They learned to extract fresh water. Now you need to take care of the cleanliness of your hands. To do this, we will need any clean plastic bottle with a lid, a needle and a rope. In the bottom of the bottle, we make several holes with a needle or awl, as shown in the photo. Close the holes with your finger, fill the water in the bottle and screw the lid. After that, you can safely remove your fingers from the holes, as water will not flow from them.

We tie a rope to the neck and hang the bottle neck up. To wash your hands, you need to Unscrew the lid a little — water will flow from the holes in the bottom. The more you Unscrew the lid, the more water will flow.

For the baby, this will be akin to a trick, and he will definitely ask why the leaky bottle does not leak? Tell him about the atmospheric pressure that affects all objects on Earth. The atmospheric pressure is much higher than the pressure of the water in the bottle, so the water does not leak out. When the cap is unscrewed and air begins to flow into the bottle, the pressure in the bottle becomes higher than atmospheric, and the water is poured out.

Magic tricks with soda
For children, carbonated water and drinks are not useful, so we use them for experiments. So, pour carbonated water into a glass and throw a few beans on the bottom (you can use rice, peas, small grapes, cherry stones, etc.). And now we watch as the beans begin to rise and fall. This will happen for a long time, as long as there is carbon dioxide in the water.

It’s all about the gas bubbles that cling to the beans and lift them to the surface. At the top, the bubbles burst and the beans sink back into the water. Similarly, the submarine rises and falls, then filling the outer tanks with air, then pumping out the air and compressing it.

Optical experiments with water
The missing coin
Pour water into a jar and place it on a coin. Ask your child to look at the side and ask: “Where is the coin?”. My daughter replied that it was a trick, and I discreetly hid the coin. Indeed, if you look from the side, the coin is not visible. If you look at the top (through the neck), the coin will be visible very clearly.experiments for children: the disappeared coin

This effect is explained by the fact that water is a different optical medium, and a ray of light passing from one optical medium to another is refracted, which distorts the real image. So the coin becomes invisible.

Broken spoon
An experiment similar to the previous one in its scientific explanation, but no less visual. We lower the spoon into a glass of water and look at the glass from the side. The spoon on the water-air border looks broken. This is because the light beam bends as it passes through the air, the sloping wall of the glass, and the water, causing the image in the water to shift and the spoon to look broken.experiments for children: broken spoon

Please note that this effect is not present if you put a spoon in a jar of water. The wall of the jar is smooth, and such distortion does not occur.

Amazing funnel
experiments for children: amazing funnel everyone knows that a funnel is needed to carefully pour water into a bottle or other container with a narrow neck. Let’s surprise our experts with the fact that the funnel will refuse to pass water inside the bottle! To do this, we need preliminary preparation: insert the funnel into the bottle and carefully cover the joint with plasticine to prevent air from seeping through this gap.

Now pour water into the funnel. It is important to fill the water not with a thin stream, but with a large flow of water, so that the air from the bottle does not escape through the narrow part of the funnel. A certain amount of water will be spilled into the bottle. But as the pressure inside the bottle and in the funnel equalizes, the process will stop. The bottle will remain half empty, and the funnel will be filled with water, but it will not pass water into the bottle.

If you insert a cocktail tube into the bottle through a narrow part of the funnel, then as the air exits, the water will flow back into the bottle.

Leaky bag-non-spill
We take any not very thin package. It is more convenient, of course, to use a package with a zip-fastener. Pour water into the bag and tie it. Sharpen sharp pencils and carefully begin to “hole” the bag with water. Much to the surprise of the baby and other adults, the water is not poured out.

experiments for children: a leaky polyethylene bag, from which the bags are made, is quite elastic, and at the point of puncture it firmly covers the pencil, not allowing water to flow out. Depending on the size of the package, you can stick from 3 pencils or more, but we limited it to five.

Movable toothpicks
Another simple experience with water, which you can use in a restaurant, if the baby needs to take a quiet game for a while. To do this, we will need toothpicks or matches and some water.

experiments for children: mobile toothpicks we put the broken toothpicks as shown in the picture and drop a little water on the bends. The tree begins to swell and is no longer able to bend so much, so it straightens up a little. The outer ends of the toothpicks move and close to form a star. When the baby understands the principle, it will be able to independently come up with other figures and patterns.

The last two experiences are very simple and quite effective. Therefore, your child, if he is 4 years old or older, will be able to show his tricks to relatives and friends, developing creative and artistic abilities.

In addition, any of these experiences with water can become part of your exciting summer walk with your baby or a fun adventure.
